I was lucky enough to take a class with Diane Moore at Harvard, and I knew that her book would not disappoint. Professor Moore has her fingers on the pulse of American education, religion, and Constitutional law. She rightly decries the disappointing and dangerous neglect of the topic of religion in public education. Unlike right-wing radicals, Moore presents an appropriate way to introduce religion in public education, without violating the separation of Church and State. Her method promotes educating students to be “religiously literate” and thus more capable of acting as respectful and intelligent citizens in an increasingly pluralistic society. Overall, she makes a good case for the cultural studies approach to overcoming this American educational defect. Anyone involved in public education, from teachers, parents, and students, to administrators and school board officials, should make this book a priority on their reading list.
